This is day 1 of the voyage south. Yesterday we cut the umbilical cord with home by driving our car to our Son’s home in Newark, DE to leave it for safe keeping. Of course we had a last minute visit with the family before Matt drove us back to our boat at the marina in Rock Hall. We were now, even more committed. Our slip neighbors, the Mosers, were on their boat and when they heard us on the dock they came out and gave us a nice bottle of wine and good wishes for our voyage. We stored the wine right next to the fine bottle we received from other very good friends, Marilyn & John O’Bryan. They had made a point of waiting for us to arrive in Rock Hall on Wednesday, so they could extend their wishes for a safe and pleasant voyage. We feel blessed to have such good friends – a number of other boating friends who have done the “snowbird” trip, have given us copies of their logs and information about anchorages, fuel stops and other helpful tips that will make our journey safer and easier.
The AM marine forecast was looking decent for southbound on the Bay with moderate wind and waves, so we started getting our lines aboard for departure. Wind was blowing across our slip so another marina neighbor, Bob (sailboat ANITA) helped us with our windward bow line and we were on our way to Solomon’s Island at 08:45 – we thought. As we were backing out of our slip I heard a radio call from Jean and Carl Moser who had left the marina about a hour earlier, so I called them back and learned they were giving us a PIREP – the winds on the open water were much stronger and waves much higher than forecast – “not very comfortable” was Carl’s summary.
So at 09:00 we were comfortably anchored in Swan Creek, about ½ mile from our slip, where we read and drank coffee for a few hours. When the wind seemed to have laid down a bit, we got underway again and since it was near noon we changed our planned destination. We headed for Knapp’s Narrows and arrived at the anchorage in Dun’s Cove by 5:00.
Dinner was the left-over chicken brought from home and jazzed up with sautéed peppers and onions – yummy and easy. The night promised to be still and pleasant so we went to bed with thoughts of making tomorrow a long day by pressing on to Deltaville, VA, since the forecast was pretty tame.
