Another sunrise after seeing Arabella

Sunday 10/5/08
06:30 and we were heading out into the river when we saw a large (100’+), 3-masted sailing vessel un-furling sails and moving toward the Bay. Since we were on a converging course we called them and learned they were going to head north, so since we would have to cross them, we steered to pass just behind their stern, and Polly got some nice close-up pics. The ship was the “Arabella” and appeared to be a pleasure cruise vessel - Windjammer style. It looked as though the topside structure had been modified to create a series of cabins that looked directly out on the deck.
As we turned to a south heading at Cedar Point, the ride was pretty comfortable and we settled in for the 55NM trip to Deltaville. Deltaville is a town not far off the Bay, on the south side of the Rappahannock River and has developed into quite a boating center for the region. We decided we would go to Dozier’s Marina to check it out, since it will be the site of the 2009 Monk owners rendezvous. We found the marina to be very nice and had just about all of the features and amenities needed by boaters. The dock master, Leon, was a retired transplant from the upper Bay area of Maryland. He was very helpful and a pleasure to chat with.
We gave the boat a quick bath to get some of the salt spray off and then relaxed with a glass of wine. Soon another transient boat arrived and tied up next to us. The couple aboard “ENTITLED” was from Jamestown, RI and had come all the way from Annapolis that day. Needless to say, the boat was a fast-mover type of cruiser and surely consumed way more diesel than our 2.4 GPH. We would take advantage of their speed the next day, to get sea condition reports from them as they cruised ahead of us by 10 to 15 NM. We grilled some burgers for dinner on one of the marinas gas BBQs and turned in early, again. If the WX forecast is correct, we hope to be in Portsmouth, VA tomorrow.
