Swing Bridge- approaching and departing

Friday 10-10-08
Daybreak showed overcast with a misty atmosphere but visibility was decent – the bridge tender’s house was easily seen about a mile away. We had breakfast and made a final visit to the bath house before getting under way at 07:30. The other 2 boats that spent the night in the marina showed no sign of stirring as we idled out of the basin. I made a call to the bridge for an opening and by the time we reached the swing span in the middle of the river, it was opening and we headed up the length of the Alligator River. The 15 SM channel up the river was nearly straight except for one slight dog leg. Wind and water were both nearly flat but visibility was down to a mile or so due to drizzle and some light fog. The radar confirmed our navigation and gave us plenty of warning of the few boats that were also on the river.
